Colrain's Oldest Citizen

Thelma James celebrated her 99th birthday!

As the oldest resident in the Town of Colrain, at the age of 99, Select Board members, Ben Eastman and Emily Thurber, presented Thelma James with the Boston Post Cane Award Proclamation on Thursday 7/16/2026. The family hosted a birthday celebration with more than 100 people attending remotely. Ms. James' name has also been added to a plaque that hangs in the Town Office.

The Boston Post Cane Award dates back to 1909. The canes were created by the former Boston Post newspaper and distributed to New England towns to honor the oldest living person in each community. The original cane given to the Town of Colrain was lost several years ago.
