Dog Licenses
State Law Requires a License (MGL Chapter 140, Section 137)
Licensing your dog is an important public safety requirement. All owners or keepers of a dog 6 months or older are required by state law to license it annually. Licensing is open from January 1st to March 31st of each year; penalties will be assessed after March 31st. Proof of alteration (neuter/spay) must be provided when first licensed, or after alteration if a renewal, and rabies vaccination must be current.
Current Fees:
- Neutered/Spayed: $5.00
- Dogs not Neutered/Spayed: $10.00
- Kennel Fees:
- 1-4 dogs: $20.00
- 5-10 dogs: $35.00
- 11 or more dogs: $50.00
- No licensing fee will be assesssed for any dog(s) owned by individuals ages 70 or older, as of December 31st of this year. Proof of age, such as a copy of a Driver's License or Birth Certificate may be requested.
Penalties:
- Late fee of $10.00 per dog after March 31st in addition to the cost of each license
- Late fee of $25.00 per dog after May 15th in addition to the cost of each license.
- A list of unlicensed dogs after May 15th will be turned over to the Animal Control Officer for collection. Any delinquent balances will be carried forward.
How to Apply for/Renew a License In Person:
- Complete this form (if a new license)
- Bring cash or check made payable to the Town of Colrain
- A copy of each dog(s) valid Rabies Certificate
- Proof of Neutered/Spayed (if applicable)
How to Apply for/Renew a License When the Town Clerk’s Office is Closed:
Drop the information below into the Town Office foyer mail slot or send in the mail
- Complete this form (if a new license)
- Bring cash or check made payable to the Town of Colrain
- A self-addressed stamped envelope or contact the Town Clerk to make other arrangements
- A copy of each dog(s) valid Rabies Certificate
- Proof of Neutered/Spayed (if applicable)
How to Apply & Pay for a License Online:
- Visit Colrain Town Clerk Online Payment website
- A $10.00 Late Fee, per dog, will automatically be assessed after March 31st and $25.00 Late Fee, per dog, after May 15th. If you are licensing a new dog after this date, please contact the Town Clerk’s office so we can waive the fee before you pay.
- A $1.00 fee will be charged to process and mail the license
